• India & Pakistan used to be a single colony called British India
• After independence they were divided into two countries based on religion
• Both nations claim an area in Northern India/Pakistan called Kashmir
•Each nation occupies part of Kashmir, but wants the
entire region
•Both nations fought a war over this terriotry in 1947.
Today, both nations posses nuclear weapons
Burma’s Military Government
• In Myanmar (Burma) the country is run by a military government
• After a 2007 natural disaster, the military govt refused to allow aid into the
country – people still struggle for basic rights

•1999-2008 Pakistan was run by a military
general named Pervez Musharraf
•Former PM Benazir Bhutto was a leading
candidate against Musharraf – she is assassinated
• Musharraf was a key US ally in
the “war on terror”
• Billions were given to his
government
• In 2009, he was forced to
resign. Recently al-Queda has
gained a stronghold in Northern
Pakistan
War on Terror - Afghanistan
• 2002: US invades Afghanistan
to remove Taliban & Al-Qaeda
• New Afghani government led
by Hamid Karzai has struggled.
Taliban/Al-Qaeda are regaining
territory
• President Obama has pledge
to increase US presence in
Afghanistan to defeat Al-Qaeda
& Taliban
