Transcript Growth - Jubilee Debt Campaign

"It is a new year and this coalition government
has one overriding resolution, and that is to
help drive growth."
Growth last year, down. Growth this year, down. Growth next year,
down.
They don’t think growth matters, but people in this country do.
…. the tests of the British people: Growth, living standards and
hope.
My view is that the overwhelming priority of
the British people is jobs, is growth, is a
strong economy
Advanced industrialised economies like ourselves cannot
afford to go on growing, particularly if we want to give people
in poorer countries a chance of being able to at least meet
their basic needs…Growth is a side issue. The end goal is
about prosperity in terms of greater wellbeing, in terms of
greater equality, in terms of having a cleaner environment, in
terms of having more security for your kids in the future."
What do they mean when
they say growth?
GDP & Inequality
•
In 1977, of every £100 of value generated by the economy, £16
went to the bottom half of workers in wages. By 2010 that figure had
declined by 26 per cent, to just £12.
