 Catalonia has 6.5 million inhabitants, (which constitutes the 6% of the
whole Spanish population) 1.7 million of whom live in its capital, Barcelona.

economically developed Region)
The private sector financed 66.4% of Catalonia's R&D expenditure.
R&D expenditure in Catalonia  23.6% of the total R&D Spanish expenditure.

Regional Government of Catalonia (Generalitat) developed and applied different
successful strategic lines through the PRI (Research and Innovation Plan)
Generalitat has to promote and support different innovation policies in different
ambits;

PRI: Research and Innovation Plan
KEY ISSUES:
•To strength the role and position of Catalonia at the European level. Catalonia has to
become one of the innovation poles of EU
•To foster and impulse the research, technology and innovation systems,
•To stimulate the integration and the collaboration of public and private actors and to
promote the sustainable economical development.
•The PRI is developed by regional and local public institutions, within a framework of
collaboration between different private and public stakeholders, among them,
universities, R&D centres, technological and innovation centres, enterprises and non
profit organizations.

business development and industrial location,
 in strong collaboration with local institution working in Innovation and R&D
management,
Matching public R&D and innovation resources with the private sector (specially
SMES)

SMES PROBLEMS IN CATALONIA
The economy of Catalonia depends on SME´S (%90)
 But the big enterprises and the public sector are the leader in the productivity.
 So there is a degrease in the productivity of SMEs  negative effect on the
Catalan economy
