How are global patterns of
development identified and
measured?

What we think…
• One common view of development is that it
can be measured economically – that
increasing wealth or increasing levels of
poverty are indicators of development.
Development is…
• Reducing levels of poverty
• Increasing levels of wealth
• Reducing the gap between the richest and poorest
members of society
• Creating equal status for men and women
• Creating justice, freedom of speech and political
participation from everyone
• Ensuring everyone is safe from conflict and terrorism
• Ensuring everyone fulfils their basic needs – food
water and shelter
• Ensuring that all children have good standards of
education.
Human Development Index
• Development is measured using the Human
Development Index (HDI).
• The HDI is worked out by putting together 3
important pieces of information:
– Life expectancy
– Literacy
– Real GDP (Gross Domestic Product – is how much
money earned)
Activity One
5 minutes
• In your own words, explain the term
‘development’.
ACTUAL DEFINITION:
• Use of resources, natural and human, to
achieve higher standards of living. Before it was
based solely on economic factors, now it
includes social measures and ideas such as
freedom.
Activity Two
10 minutes
1. Stick in your world map showing HDI.
2. Copy the question into your books beneath
the map and answer. (4 marks)
Describe the distribution of the highest and
lowest countries according to the HDI index
map.
The Brandt Line
• Public awareness of the development gap is not
new.
• It was first brought into the news headlines in the
Brandt Report in 1980.
• This report by Willy Brandt, a German politician,
drew a line on the map that separated the richer
countries from the poorer ones.
DRAW THE BRANT LINE ONTO YOUR HDI MAP AND
LABEL IT (ALSO ADD LABELS FROM THIS SLIDE)
• The MEDC’s are situated mainly in the northern
hemisphere.
• The LEDC’s are situated in the southern
hemisphere.
• The line loops around Australia and New Zealand
to include them in the richer half of the map.
• Is this still accurate today?
What is Infant Mortality Rate and
Life Expectancy?
• Health data is also often used to describe a
country’s level of development.
• Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is the number of
children who die before the age of 1 for every
1000 that are born.
• Life expectancy is the average age to which
people can expect to live.
What countries have the
highest/lowest infant
mortality?

• Draw a scattergraph
of this data putting
IMR on the vertical

horizontal axis.
• Describe the type of
correlation shown.
• Stick the table and
graph into your
book.
