THE CHEMISTRY BEHIND HYDROLATS
WHAT ARE HYDROLATS?
• Residual floral waters of the steam distillation
process of essential oils
• Contain micronized droplets of essential oils
• Help regulate skin metabolism
• Alcohol-free
Examples include:
 Rose
 Neroli
 Lavender

 Quantity in distilled

 Colourless liquid which has and aroma similar to
bergamot and is used in many perfumes
 No known toxicity
 Sedative
Aldehydes
 Hexanal
 Found in chamomile and lavender hydrolat
 Used as flavouring
WHY USE HYDROLATS?
• A pedigree of worthwhile therapeutic
application and safety
• Ultra mild in action compared with essential
oils - useful for the treatment of the young,
the elderly, and those in a state of delicate
health, including babies and convalescents
• Does not irritate our skin and mucous
surfaces
• The essential oil compounds are more
acceptable to our bodily fluids
WHY USE HYDROLATS?
• Saturated with some of the water soluble (or
hydrophilic) compounds that are not present
in essential oils
• Mildly astringent yet non-drying to the skin
• May be substituted for herbal tinctures or
medical objections
• Hydrolats can be used both externally and
internally
• Extremely mild and completely safe
USES PERTAINING TO SKIN CARE
• Non-irritating and non-aggressive to the skin
and mucous membranes
• Well-suited for skin care preparations,
including cleansing, baby care and face and
body care
• Added in the aqueous phase of creams and
lotions to make products such as aromatic
baths, masks, creams, lotions, gels, etc.
• Also used alone as toners
USES PERTAINING TO SKIN CARE
• Effectively blended into masks
• Blends can be made for all skin types, for skin
problems and for the maintenance of dry,
sensitive, greasy, red or blotchy skin, acne,
dermatitis, psoriasis and rosacea skin types
• Used in place of de-ionized water in a
moisturizing cream or lotion, as its benefits
are added to the overall effect on the skin
• Counteract the drying effects of a long
aeroplane flight, air-conditioned rooms and
cars

We blended hydrolats and essential oils to a
unscented moisturizer base to give effective
moisturizers with all-natural scents.

Essential
oils
Geranium and rose essential oils were mixed with rose
hydrolat and added to the unscented moisturizer base.
The other two blends were lavender essential oil with
lavender hydrolat and chamomile essential oil with
chamomile hydrolat respectively.
