SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATION
 In
different field of life we use to
represent different items, action
or events with a simple diagram,
this pictorial representation is
known as ‘Symbol’.
 So, symbol means pictorial
representation of a thing.
BENEFITS OF SYMBOLIC
REPRESENTATION
The pictorial representations can be
understand easily.
 The symbols can be understood and
learned by even illiterates or uneducated.
 In multi-linguistic world the pictorial
representations develops a universal
language.
 The pictorial representations emphasis on
important aspect of thing.

COMMON ELECTRICAL
SYMBOLS
In electrical science study several
symbolic diagrams are used for learning.
We will learn some basic and common
symbolic diagrams used in study of
electricity.
 SYMBOLIC DIAGRAM OF WIRE:- The
wire is most common thing used in
electricity.The wire, made of conducting
material, provides path for flow of electric
current.
1.Symbolic diagram of wire

II.
Wire joints:- To expand the path of
electricity a network of wire is
required, hence the wire are interconnected for larger length.
Overlapping of wire:- The
overlapping of wire means that the
wires are crossing each other but
wires are not connected
2.Cell and battery and D.C.
supply
 Cell:-
The cells are source of
electrical energy and represented
with symbol showing its two terminal.
 Battery:- The combination of two or
more cells is known as a battery.
 Direct current supply:- The electricity
in which the current flows in one
direction.
3.A.C. supply and switch
 Alternating
current supply:- In A.C.
electricity, the direction of current and
value of voltage keeps changing. It is
represented by the symbol of ‘wave’.
 Switch:- The switch is a device which
is used to make or break the electrical
circuit. There are different types of
switches used in electrical circuit.
4.Incandescent lamp/bulb, tube
light and fan
Incandescent lamp/bulb:- The electricity
device which is used to give light.
 Tube light:- The tube light is an electrical
device, which is used to produce light with
help of two other devices, named as:1. Starter.
2. Chock/ballast.
• Fan:- The electric fan converts electrical
energy into mechanical energy.

5.Motor and socket or wall outlet
Motor:- The motor is an electrical device
which converts electrical energy into
mechanical energy.
 Socket or wall outlet:- The socket are open
electrical points which can be used to
connect removable electrical appliances.
There are two types of sockets:1. Two pin socket.
2. Three pin socket.

6.Electrical terminals (in A.C.)
and fuse
Electrical terminals (in A.C.):-There are
three terminals in normal house wiring or
electrical system, which are known as:1. Phase- Represented with ‘P’.
2. Neutral- Represented with ‘N’.
3. Earth- The terminal of earth is used for
safety purpose.
 Fuse:- The fuse is a safety device, which
breaks the electric circuit when current
flows more than the specified limit.
