What is Cloud Chamber?
Cloud chamber also known as Wilson
Chamber is a historic devise used to make
charged tracks. Originally cosmic rays in
pre-accelerator times visible over a large
volume. It’s filled with gas.
How was it invented?
This cloud chamber was
invented c. 1900 by C.T.R
Wilson.
It was invented to study
formation of the clouds
produce when alpha&beta
particles traveled through
them.
He won the Nobel prize
for Physics for his cloud
chambers.
Using cloud chambers
we see the trails of
radioactivity particles.
What discoveries did it make
possible?
Bubble Chamber
Bubble chamber is a devise for detecting
charged particles and other radiations by
means of tracks. Bubble left in a chamber
filled with liquid hydrogen or other
liquefied gas.
It was invented in 1952 by Donald Glaser.
Spark Chamber
Spark chamber is a device for recording the
passage of elementary particles produced by
reaction in a particle acceleration. Particles
pass through a stack of metal plates or wire
grids that contain high voltage between
alternate layers. It it replaced the bubble
chamber.
It was most useful in searching for very rare
elements.
It took the place of bubble chambers.
Bubble and Spark Chambers
Physics have developed other particles
detectors, notably the bubble and spark
chambers which became widely used
in the study if radioactivity, X-rays, Cosmic
rays, and other phenomena today in the
world.
