Laboratory Safety
(How to have fun in the lab without
getting hurt)
Know hazard classification

The HMIS label, Like the NFPA 704 diamond, provides hazardous information. Color for type of hazard
and numbers for the degree of the hazard, four being the most hazardous.
In addition the HMIS system provides information on the type of personal protective equipment (PPE)
that should be used when handling this material. In this category a letter is used to indicate what
combination of PPE should be used.
A = Safety glasses
B = Safety glasses, gloves
C = Safety glasses, gloves, chemical apron
D = Face shield, gloves, chemical apron
E = Safety glasses, gloves, dust respirator
F = safety glasses, gloves, chemical apron, dust respirator
G = Safety glasses, gloves, vapor respirator
H = Splash goggles, gloves, chemical apron, vapor respirator
I = Safety glasses, gloves, dust and vapor respirator
J = Splash goggles, gloves, chemical apron, dust and vapor respirator
K = Air line hood or mask, gloves, full chemical suit, boots
X = Ask Supervisor


No person is to work
alone in a laboratory

All work is to be done
during the scheduled
laboratory periods.

Unauthorized
experiments are
forbidden.

"Horseplay" is strictly
forbidden in the
laboratory.

Unauthorized persons
are not allowed in the
laboratory without
teacher’s permission.

Do not attempt to pick up
broken glass with your bare
hands.
Work only in well ventilated
areas.
Turn off Bunsen burners
when they are not in use
and NEVER
leave one unattended.

In case of any accident
or injury, no matter how
minor, notify the
instructor at once.
Clean up chemical or
biological material spills
only under the direct
supervision of your
laboratory instructor.

Notify the teacher of any
medical problems or
allergies (to anything to be
used in the lab) you have.

Eating, drinking or gum
chewing is NOT permitted
at any time in the
laboratory.

Wear goggles when
something can get in your
eyes.
Laboratory coats are to be
worn to protect your clothing;
wear clothing that covers your
torso and legs. Sandals and
canvas shoes are not
permitted. Wear only shoes
that shed liquids. NEVER
attend lab with bare feet.

High voltage or other
electronic equipment should
be used only after being
demonstrated by your
instructor.
Be aware of your neighbors'
activities for you may be the
victim of their mistakes. If
necessary, inform the
instructor.
