Linac3 power converters upgrade: operational requirements
•
Linac3 repetition rate will be increased to 100ms instead of 200ms.
•
For the power converters, the more severe operational modes are:
13 injections spaced by 100ms
5Hz operation for scrubbing

Linac3 and LEIR transfer lines power converters upgrade
 In the Linac3, all converters are DC except the MINIDISCAP converters for pulsed steerers and
MAXIDISCAP converters for pulsed quadrupoles.
 The operation of the converters in ETL and further will not change.
10 pulsed converters
(MAXIDISCAP) for quadrupole
magnets in ITF, ITH and ITE
14 pulsed converters
(MINIDISCAP) for steerer
magnets in ITF and ITH
 These pulsed converters have to be upgraded/modified to allow operation with 100ms repetition
rate.

Pulsed converters for the Linac3 steerer magnets
 The installed converters (MINIDISCAP) can deliver current pulses with 20A at 5Hz.
 The steerer magnets can withstand the increased RMS current value that correspond to 100ms
spaced pulses.
 We have evaluated two options:
•
replace the existing converters by new ones (MIDIDISCAP) that can run with  20A at 10Hz with
some modifications on the charger,
•
limit the maximum current on the existing converter at  10A to allow their operation at 10Hz.
 Considering that the maximum operational current is 8A, and to allow some cost savings, the
second option has been retained.

Pulsed converters for the Linac3 steerer magnets
 Testing with a dummy load has validated this option. Some modifications (tuning) on the converter
electronics will be needed.
10A output current at 10Hz
 No budget is required for the converter modifications.
 Planning: the modifications can be implemented in 1-2 days.
 The request for the replacement of the MINIDISCAP converters has been transferred to the
consolidation program.

LIU-Ions Power Converters for Linac3
Pulsed converters for the Linac3 quadrupole magnets
 The installed converters (MAXIDISCAP - version 1) can deliver, depending on the magnet load,
+200A (for type 7 magnets) or +320A (for type 9 magnets) maximum current at 5Hz.
MAXIDISCAP#1 output current
with magnet type 9 – 320A – 5Hz
 These converters cannot deliver the same maximum current at 10Hz and an upgrade is needed.
 So far, no final decision concerning the possibility to use the existing magnets has been taken.

Pulsed converters for the Linac3 quadrupole magnets
 For the LIU-Ions EPC workpackage, the replacement of the existing converters by MAXIDISCAP version 4 (to be developed) has been foreseen.
•
compared to version 3 (used in Linac4) this updated version will embed a capacitor charger
with increased charging capability.
•
if new magnets are installed (to replace the existing type 7 and 9), their electrical parameters
have to be compatible with the MAXIDISCAP #4 converters.
 The control of the MAXIDISCAP #4 converters will be the implemented using the FGC3 interface
and the installation of a gateway /ethernet cables is required (EPC installation cost)
 The total budget is ~300kchF
 The installation of the new converters will be realized during the 2017-2018 shutdown (or before
if possible…)

LBS line
 It has been decided to consolidate the existing LBS line for the emittance measurements with Ions.
 The power converter for the spectrometer (LBS.BVT10) is old (40 years?) and will be replaced.
 The operational requirements are:
 An APOLO_2P power converter will be installed (contribution from Linac4 project) with:

LBS line
 The converter will be installed in the Linac2 equipment gallery during LS2 (when the Linac2 is
definitively stopped).
 FC3 control will have to allow the use of
‘virtual devices’ for the operation of the converters
installed in the Linac3-4 common line.
 Budget is 20kchf for the installation cost.

Linac3 consolidation program
 Operation and maintenance of Linac3 power converters is difficult due to the various converters
types that are installed. Moreover, many converters types have been supplied by different
collaborations and are not “EPC standard”.
 EPC has made a consolidation request for Linac3 power converters.
 The upgrade of the converters for the pulsed steerers has been integrated in the consolidation
budget request.
 Total budget is ~900kchf to replace all the converters except the MAXIDISCAP#4, LPSS, HEINZINGER
and N10 that are “EPC standard”.
 The ‘ideal’ schedule for this consolidation would be after LS2.

LIU-Ions : EPC summary
• LIU-Ions EPC functional specification is close to completion.
• EVM structure has been defined and is being updated.
• Total budget is currently 996kchf (including SPS injection MSI-V converters) with the following
repartition and spending profile:
