Motivation
• Deeply interested in renewable energy, hold the
belief that the whole world will greatly rely on
renewable energy in the near future
• Topic is challenging to me, might be not able to
achieve all the goals, but I will try.
• At this stage, the more I learn the more interested
I become into it
Background
of three phase unbalanced problem
• How does it become a problem?
• What is the consequence?
• Why worth researching?
Background--How does it become a problem?
• A large number of unequal single phase loads or
resources must be served by distribution network
• And to make it worse, if these single phase loads or
resources are using renewable energy, they
sometimes would change dramatically, since it is
unpredictable and unstable
• Moreover, the fact is more and more people begin to
use renewable energy
Background--What is the consequence?
• List several consequences it might bring as
examples
▫ Substantial Voltage Drop in bus(if large amount of
distributed energy resources suddenly kicked in)
▫ Create heavy power flow in certain bus(overload
or overheated)
▫ Challenging to predict accurately and timely
 Might cause falsely action of breaker or phase
shifter and leads to bigger problem
▫ Whole area might black out when hitting the
threshold, as professor's example in California
Background--Why worth researching?
• Provide a robust/high efficient/economic
operating power grid by finding out the global
optimal solution
• Provide as a principle and criteria when a large
amount of single phase renewable power source
would connect to grid
• Lots more, such as provide relatively quick and
accurate solution for ISO
Project Goals
• Review and catch up convex optimization
fundamentals
• Understand the papers professor suggested as
much as possible
• Use CVX to solve balanced power flow
optimization in MATLAB
• Duplicate the paper’s results in MATLAB, using
toolbox like PSAT/CVX/Matpower
Project Goals
• Trying to move one step forward
▫ maybe add one more constrain
▫ or trying to find out the limitation of the papers.
• Trying to work in both directions:
▫ network optimization
▫ and power electronics equipment optimization
 use more three phase inverter
 improve its three phase balance
 power quality monitoring unit to collect information about
three-phase unbalance factor
