Learning objectives
• To learn what is meant by sustainable fashion
• To learn about different issues within the
clothing industry and consider the moral,
ethical and environmental impact
• To learn about ways of being more sustainable
consumers and designers
http://listengirlfriends.wordpress.com/tag/sweatshops/
Watch the film and take notes . . . .
• What do you think started the fire?
• What mattered more than the working
conditions of the workers?
• What is ‘fast fashion’?
• How many pieces of clothing does the world
consume in a year?
• What happens when we consume more?
• What is the impact on the environment?
• What were the moral and ethical issues raised
in this film?

attention to the
powerful position
regarding sustainability,
fashion can occupy if it
so chooses.

Take notes of the facts!
Vivienne Westwood says "Buy less"
“It doesn't mean
therefore you have to
just buy anything
cheap. Instead of
buying six things, buy
one thing that you
really like. Don't keep
buying just for the sake
of it.”
“I just think people
should invest in
the world. Don't
invest in fashion,
but invest in the
world.”
IS THIS MORAL / ETHICAL?
Dying for a Bargain: Panorama
investigates the human cost of cheap
clothes
A BBC investigation has found factory workers in
Bangladesh are working 19-hour shifts in dangerous
conditions to make clothes for Western high streets.
Secret filming by Panorama discovered that some
factories hide the long hours from retailers by keeping
two sets of books.

Design brief:
• As a sustainable fashion designer, you are to transform
a T-shirt using the principles of the 6 R’s.
• You need to Reuse an “old”/second hand (an existing)
T-shirt and adapt/change/rethink the style so it will
appeal to a customer that wants a unique , one off
product.
• You also need to incorporate decorative surface
techniques in order to appeal to your target market.
Design a price tag to tell consumers
about the ‘true cost’ of their clothes
Peer Assess
• Have they included information about the
moral, ethical and environmental impact?
• Have they talked about the 6 R’s?
• One WWW comment
• One EBI comment

“You’d never guess it’s
made from recycled
plastic bottles, would
you?”
