Alive or Not??
Ms.Waterman
Science 8
How Do We Know If Something is Alive?
Can you name some living
things? 20 second quick
write
What do you look for in
living things that tells
you that they are alive?
ORGANISMS
Living things get referred to as ORGANISMS!
Although organisms may all look different they all
carry out similar processes AND
All organisms (living things) are made up
of CELLS !!!
Little Critters Video
Watch this demonstration, in this video the subject places
a little “critter” into the petri dish, then they add food
and watch what happens!
After the video:
PREDICT : Alive or Not? * Write your answer & reasons
why on a sticky note and tape it to the board
ALIVE
because….
NOT
ALIVE
because….
ANSWER REVEALED
As you have seen some non-living things may show some
characteristics that we think make them seem alive!
….They can be tricky!!
So in order for something to be actually classified as a
living thing it must show ALL of the characteristics of
living things!
NONLIVING!!
Characteristics Of Living Things
There are 7 Main things that scientists use to figure out if something is
alive!
Go to your textbooks pages, 16 & 17 and fill out the characteristics of
living things chart
In the chart try and come up with examples of living AND
nonliving things that might show that character :)
Movement
All living plants and animals move
Humans and animals use their bodies to move around
Plants can move towards the light or water
Respiration (breathing)
- All living things exchange gases
Humans- take oxygen in, and give out
CO2
Plants- take CO2 into their leaves and
use it to make food, and then give out
O2
Respond to Stimuli
-
Stimuli something that causes an organism to respond
- All living things respond to change in the
environment
Ex: Winter- some animals hibernate- respond to
changes in temperature
Leaves change colours in fall- respond to changes in
seasons
Grows & Develops
- All living things have the ability to grow and change!
- Humans and animals grow from babies- adults
- Plants can grow from little seeds to big plants
Can Reproduce
All living things make offspring
- Humans & animals come from babies
- New plants can grow from seeds
- Bacteria- can grow from budding,
Pinch off and become a new organism
Eliminates Waste
- All living animals & plants have to get rid of their
waste products
- There are special organs in our body to help get rid
of waste- kidneys, lungs, skin
Nutrition - Uses ENERGY
- All living animals and plants need energy!
Plants- can make their own energy in their leaves &
stems
Animals get energy from eating food!
The sun is the main source of energy for living things
Characteristics of Living Things Check List
There are 8 different pictures of living/non-living
things
YOUR JOB is to visit each picture and fill out the
checklist,
checking for each one of the characteristics
After checking off the characteristics decide if the
thing is living or nonliving
