DO NOW: HAVE YOUR CELL
PROJECT OUT!
1. What REACTANTS are needed for cellular
respiration?
2. What two body systems provide these
reactants?
3. What are the waste products created by
cellular respiration?
4. How is this different than photosynthesis?
5. What pigment makes plants appear green?
CLASS PLANT PROJECT!!
• LET’S MAKE A PREDICTION:
IF WE COVER SOME OF THE LEAVES OF
OUR CLASS PLANT WITH OPAQUE
PAPER COVERS, WHAT WILL HAPPEN
AFTER A WEEK?!
- Write your prediction on a note card
and post it by our class plant!
(… anyone have suggestions for names?)
Photosynthesis
Energy from the Sun is
necessary to begin the
process.
Besides green plants, some algae and some
bacteria can also make their own food.
Radiant energy from the Sun,
in the form of light, begins
photosynthesis.
Water is taken into the plant by the
roots and carried to the leaves
through the xylem .
H20

H20
Phloem moves
sugars from
the places
where the food
is produced to
the places
where it is
needed or
stored.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is taken
into the plant through the
stomata on the underside of
leaves.

Water vapor is released into
the atmosphere through the
stomata on the leaves.

KNOWLEDGE…
WHAT IS THIS PROCESS CALLED?!!?!
Photosynthesis Chemical
Equation
Materials: Notes from Today and Last Class!
Voices/Movement: “Restaurant voices,” sitting
still
Instructions:
1.Write the chemical equation for
photosynthesis IN WORDS in the space below.
2.Write a sentence describing this chemical
process.
Explanation of the Chemical
Equation.
Water Molecule: H2O
SIX WATER MOLECULES
VENN DIAGRAM
Voices/Movement: “Restaurant,” sitting still
Instructions: Fill out the Venn Diagram on your
notes to compare and contrast cellular
respiration and photosynthesis!
Success: You should write at least three (3)
things in each category!
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION
Cellular Respiration &
Photosynthesis Relationship
Voices/Movement: “Restaurant,” sitting still
Instructions: Describe the relationship between
cellular respiration and photosynthesis!
Success: You should write at least three (3)
complete sentences!
INSIDE OF A PLANT!
PHOTOSYNTHESIS =
Water + sunlight + carbon dioxide -> oxygen + glucose
WHAT PROCESS DO WE NEED OXYGEN AND GLUCOSE
FOR?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
…… WHAT PROCESS?
CELLULAR RESPIRATION!!!!!!!!
PHOTOSYNTHESIS =
Water + sunlight + carbon dioxide -> oxygen +
glucose
CELLULAR RESPIRATION =
oxygen + glucose -> carbon dioxide + water +
energy!!!!!
CELLULAR RESPIRATION HAPPENS IN BOTH
PLANTS AND ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PHOTOSYNTHESIS IS ONLY IN PLANTS!!!!!!
HOW IS THIS CONNECTED TO THE
ENERGY PYRAMID???!!?!?
WHEN WE USE ENERGY (ATP), IT IS RELEASED
INTO THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE FORM OF
WHAT???????
PHOTOSYNTHESIS =
Water + sunlight + carbon dioxide -> oxygen +
glucose
CELLULAR RESPIRATION =
oxygen + glucose -> carbon dioxide + water +
energy!!!!!
WHEN WE USE THIS ENERGY ….
IT TURNS INTO HEAT!!!!!!!
SO WHAT PROCESSES ARE
HAPPENING HERE?!?!
WHERE DO THESE PROCESSES
HAPPEN?
CELLULAR RESPIRATION:
IN THE MITOCHONDRIA!!
PHOTOSYNTHESIS:
IN THE CHLOROPLASTS!!!
HOW DO CHLOROPLASTS CAPTURE
SUNLIGHT?!
WITH A GREEN PIGMENT CALLED ………..
CHLOROPHYLL!!!!!!!
NOW… TODAY… WE ARE GOING TO
USE….
THE SINK OF SCIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!
CHLOROPHYLL EXTRACTION
Voices/Movement: You will use “restaurant
voices” to talk to your lab partner.
Instructions: Listen to the instructions I am
about to explain! They are also written on your
LAB SHEETS!!!
Success: Finish this lab activity carefully and
safely! Answer all the questions thoughtfully
before our time is up.
TEXT SUPPORT
Materials: Textbook, pages 231-234.
Voices/Movement: “Restaurant voices” and
sitting still.
Instructions: Complete the reflection questions
in your notes (answer on a separate piece of
paper) as you read the text!
