Transcript How to plant and look after Gliricidia

How can I use Gliricidia and what are it’s benefits to soils and crops?
Gliricidia makes an excellent hedge
or fence because it is fast growing,
easy to propagate, and provides
good shade
When you prune Gliricidia trees, you
can use the leaves as compost
manure or green tea manure.
Gliricidia flowers are a good
attraction for bee’s during
honey production
Gliricidia is good for natural
fertiliser and increases both soil
fertility and crop yields
Gliricidia makes good fuel wood
because it burns slowly, hot, and
produces little smoke or sparking.
Women and girls can now have an
easier way of growing, managing
and collecting firewood.
Planting Gliricidia will reduce
soil erosion in deforested areas
and grows fast when planted
How to plant and look after Gliricidia
Agro forestry means
combining agriculture and
forestry to improve farm
yields as well as reduce the
effects of erosion
Seed should be kept dry before
planting into the soil. Once
planted, they will germinate
within 7-10 days
Any plastic seedling container
can be used for planting the
gliricidia in.
REMEMBER – HOW TO
PLANT
Keep the seedlings up to 6
weeks (30cm height)
before planting into the
ground
When you plant gliricidia,
make sure you space it out
evenly, at least 2 x 2 metres
apart for woodlots, and for
agroforestry to boost farm
yields plant 30cm between
plantings in a row and 4 m
between rows.
Agroforestry systems can
restore much greater quantities
of carbon, above and below
ground, than agriculture
systems without trees.
