Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is
essential to
understanding why all
life on earth depends
upon the existence of
plants.
The Process of Photosynthesis


Photo means light
and synthesis
means putting
together.
During
photosynthesis
minerals and
water are
combined with
carbon dioxide
from the air.
How Does Photosynthesis
Help us?



During photosynthesis
oxygen is released into
the air.
When we breath air, we
take in oxygen and
release carbon dioxide.
Plants take in carbon
dioxide and release
oxygen.
How do Plants Produce
Their own Food?




Most plants can produce all their
own food because they contain
chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is a substance that
makes the leaves of most plants
green.
Green plants use chlorophyll to
capture sunlight.
The they use the energy from
sunlight to make food.
Cycle of Nature





Green plants use the sun’s
energy to change water,
minerals and carbon dioxide
into food and oxygen.
Oxygen is breathed by
animals.
Food helps the plants grow.
Plants become food for the
animals.
When plants and animals die
they decay and return to the
soil.
If there were no plants...




There would be no
food for plant eating
animals, so they
would die.
There would be no
food for the meat
eating animals.
There would be no
oxygen to breath.
The cycle of nature
would be brokenlifeless planet.
Food Energy



People get energy from
plants in the form of food.
Food energy is stored in
almost every part of a
plant.
Food energy is the fuel that
makes your body work.
Plants and People




Plants are part of our
lives in many ways.
When we are hungry
we eat plants for
food.
Every time we take a
breath we use
oxygen that was
released by green
plants.
It is a cycle of give
and take, borrow and
return.
