Ecology Powerpoint
interdependence
Interdependence is shown in coral reefs
because all of the organisms and fish rely
on each other to live. Because of the food
chain and the environment.
Chapter 18
Section 1 Introduction to Ecology
Levels of Organization
abiotic
Abiotic features mean, in the winter
season, most animals, plants and other
organisms are dead or in hibernation.
What is shown here would be an example
of abiotic factors such as snow and
extremely low temperatures, which causes
many things to dissipate.
biotic
Biotic features occur when spring and
summer seasons are at their peak. Most
animals plants and organisms are alive at
this time. A few of the factors of the biotic
time are lush vegetation and budding
flowers which are obvious signs of new
life.
Acclimation
Acclimation is when different kinds of
animals such as the angelfish which is
shown here has to have its body become
accustomed to different temperatures
slowly so it can survive in the environment
it has been moved to.
adaptation
Adaptation is when different species adjust
over time from generation to generation.
Such as the chipmunk, over time it has
had to adjust to different environments.
Its color, its routines, where it lives and
other important factors.
conformer
Conformers are organisms or animals and
plants that cant control their conditions
outside their body when the
environment changes. Such as the
jellyfish. When the water temperature
changes so does their body temperature
and other characterists within their
body.
regulator
Regulators are organisms, plants or animals
that control their body conditions and
have internal conditions that change with
the environment. Such as the white
Siberian tiger. When the environment
changes from hot to cold its body
conditions change as well.
dormancy
• Dormancy mostly called hibernation is
when the seasons change and particular
animals undergo heavy sleeping for many
months at a time. Such as the black bear
that undergoes hibernation during the
winter months.
migration
Migration is when some animals that don’t
adjust to the cold go to other climates that
they are used to. Such as the sea turtle,
instead of adapting to the cold water they
migrate to other waters.
generalist
• Generalist’s are animals that eat a wide
variety of foods, such as giraffes. Who eat
many different leaves from many different
plants, and many different insects.
specialist
Specialists are animals that eat only
particular foods, such as the cheetah who
only eats meats. A wide variety but mostly
only meats.
Producers
• Aquatic ecosystems
• Photosynthetic protists
• Bacteria
Consumers.
• Herbivores
• Carnivores
• Omnivores
• Detritivores
