Why use Biomass?
•
•
•
•
Biomass is environmentally friendly
Biomass doesn’t add to the greenhouse effect.
Biomass is Carbon-Neutral
Biomass is a renewable source of energy.
Fossil fuels ‘v’ Willow
• Fossil fuels will
run out soon.
• Willow will keep
on growing.
• Fossil fuels put
carbon dioxide
into the air.
• Willow takes in
carbon dioxide
when it grows.
•
•
•
•
Grown to make biomass fuel.
Grown to heat houses.
It is replacing fossil fuels.
Willow is a alternative energy
• 10% of the fuel grown is
used to heat farm
buildings.
• 90% is sold to Drax
power station.
The life cycle of willow.
• Gareth the farmer
grows willow in fields
• When it is 3 years old
it is coppiced.
• The willow grows
back.
• The willow gets dried.
• It is chipped so it will
go into the hopper
• It goes into the burner
• It heats up the water in
the boiler.
The more minibeasts
you have the more
birds you get.
If you take away
hedgerows the
minibeasts will die
and the birds will die
because they eat
the minibeasts.
• Gareth keeps a lot
of habitats in his
farm
• He never takes
away dead wood
because he would
destroy habitats
Looking after wildlife
• The farmer has a 6
meter margin around his
willow fields.
• He leaves woodlands
and field margins to
grow
• He leaves dead wood to
be used as habitats .
• He uses natural
fertiliser.
• He looks after and
plants new hedges.
