Air masses meet and produce fronts, which can
bring lowered pressure with precipitation and stormy
weather. Fronts can be cold, warm, or stationary.

A low-pressure system can develop wherever
there is a center of low pressure. One place this
often happens is along a boundary between a
warm air mass and a cold air mass.
• Part of the boundary between the air masses
moves south and becomes a cold front.
• Part of the boundary moves north and
becomes a warm front.
• A center of low pressure forms where the ends
of the two fronts meet.

Weather changes as air masses move.
Large weather systems generally move with the
pattern of global winds—west to east over most
of North America. But, within a weather system,
winds can blow in different directions.
Our stormageddon occurred because the moist
warm air from the south met a polar vortex and
caused all the precipitation to freeze as it fell.
Most large storms in Michigan occur when the
jet stream slows down and dips down almost to
the Gulf of Mexico and brings all that warm,
moist air up north.
